The Saimiri Cognition Lab was founded in April 2010 when a group of 11 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) moved in to one of the Green Houses of the University of Vienna. The Department of Cognitive Biology  is housing the squirrel monkeys for a period of 2 years while the Zoo Schönbrunn is rebuilding the enclosures. The project is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant “SOMACCA” (The Syntax of Mind: A Computational Comparative Apporach). The Saimiri Cognition Lab currently consists of 5 members of staff and 8 squirrel monkeys (see “Staff” and “Pictures”).
